CLEVELAND MAGAZINE ARTICLE

Article from Cleveland Magazine

Flirting for Fun

On the road to love, Scott Gralnick is the guy driving the crappy car. But that hasn’t slowed his crusade to get us back to finding that someone special the old-fashioned way — you know, without using the Internet.

Scott Gralnick’s first rule for getting a girl is to conveniently forget to mention he’s written a book called How to Get a Girl in a ’95 Corolla.

The rest of us don’t have to worry about that. Unfortunately, few of us are as smooth as Beachwood’s 24-year-old “bachelor by choice.” Gralnick strolls into Caribou Coffee all wavy hair and two-day beard. Despite it being after 2 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon, he sincerely wishes me a good morning and asks how my Saturday night was. His, of course, was crazy.

He pulls out his camera and is disappointed. He’s already downloaded the pictures from last night. He doesn’t even want to tell me about it. He says I wouldn’t believe it.

But Gralnick has not hauled himself here to talk about his late-night exploits. He has real concerns. Mainly, that no one talks to one another anymore. His sister has even signed up with an online dating service. He’s disgusted.

“So many people rely on technology,” he says. “They don’t know how to meet people anymore. They want to text. They want to send Facebook messages. Technology has gone too far.”

Now, he’s on a mission to spread his alternative to online dating: talking to people in real life — like face-to-face — without e-mailing first. Gralnick says he knows that anyone over the age of 30 will laugh at his advice because it sounds so basic. Then again, if no one over the age of 30 used online dating, it wouldn’t be the industry it is today. Yes, all of us could use a refresher.

“Meeting [people] is not tough,” he says. “It’s about simple interactions, things that everyone can do: smile, make eye contact, say ‘hello,’ be kind, be sincere, be honest. But if it’s so easy, I guess more people would do it.”

And that’s why his yet-to-be-published book doesn’t belong in the self-help aisle. That’s too tame. No, this is really a full-throttle kick in the ass. Gralnick doesn’t come out and say it, but his argument goes like this: If a guy from Beachwood driving a rusted car made before Monica Lewinsky was an intern at the White House can meet women, what the hell is wrong with you?

So, I ask him to show me first-hand how it’s done. He approaches a blond woman pondering her choice of drinks. After a few minutes of talking, he walks away.

“Pink is her favorite color,” he reports. “I saw she had on a pink shirt, pink socks and a pink bracelet. I complimented her bracelet, and then we got to talking. She’s here to study.”

“But you didn’t get her phone number,” I protest.

“She’ll remember me,” he says.

“Shouldn’t we be at a bar?” I ask.

“Absolutely not,” he says. “Women know they’re going to get hit on at a bar. Who knows how many drinks she’s had? Who knows how many you’ve had? It’s just a lot more work.”

Yes, Gralnick understands that fear pushes people behind computer screens and rejection is harder to take when it’s face to face. But this isn’t asking that middle school crush to go with you; this is adulthood, damn it. Rejection is part of life.

Just like his love life, Gralnick hasn’t yet accepted an overture from a publisher that he says is interested in the book. He doesn’t love the idea of commitment. He has a wandering eye. He’s hoping to land a deal that’s a little more lucrative. He dreams of a movie someday.

Ironically, he’s been keeping people apprised of the book’s progress via a Facebook page, facebook.com/95corolla.

In the meantime, he’s already thinking about hitting the road next summer and taking his message on a cross-country trip.

“It’s trial and error,” he says of making his approach work for you. “Well, a lot of error. You have to fail and be willing to make a fool of yourself. But get used to being yourself. Never lie. And …”

“And?”

“She just looked at me,” Gralnick says. “The girl in pink. She pointed to me when she left with her friend. … She’ll remember me next time.”

The way to higher ground

Bob Voturba

I like to stress how important net-working can be in the day to day life we live. As you might know by now, I frequent Caribou coffee quite a bit. One late afternoon I saw a gentlemen there with a joyful women at his side. He seemed to be happy. Not just normal happy but a happy which resonated through the roof. Of course being an outgoing person that I am, I walked right up to him and introduced myself.

“Hi, sorry for interrupting, but you both caught my attention” With truth and sincerity backing me up I then formed a great connection on the path which I have been journeying on for some time now.

Bob, like myself is on a journey. He is the founder for the orginization “One Million Acts Of Kindness.” He told me how he plans to go to college campus selling stickers and shirts for very cheap with slogans promoting peace and kindness.

With Kindness in mind I offered him my slogan from the past, “Peace….As It should be!” It would be great for shirts I said. He loved  the idea so much he then wanted to help me in return.

You know it, He knows certain talk show hosts! He told me he could get my book directly into there hands. Now I sit here today at Caribou knowing my book is in her hands with a chance to be on there show. Just from being kind and sincere in meeting a new person, and offering some help.  Click here for his web site.

Late Night Treats

lessons-from-a-wise-manJudge not for what you see

Walking along the street I came across a man who played guitar.   Some would stop and listen, others just walked by with no concern of who he is or what he has done. People tend to judge pretty harshly these days! I also fall into the category at times of not caring or having concern, but something made me stop and listen to the Coventry one man band. Perhaps it was the song? Could have even been the ladies surrounding him. I am just glad I was able to sit and talk with this wise old young man!

If we take a step back and judge not, We then open ourselves to new adventures and opportunity!  Even if its as simple as hearing a good tune by a good ole guy!

With no further ado Live on my Web site for the first time Mr. Wise Man-you can find him on the weekends on Coventry Road in front of Mongolian BBQ

Morning Coffee

Caribou Thoughts

At the Ungodly hour (9am) I had a meeting with a great guy named Jamie. He has been taking his time recently to show me the “ropes” per-say with Social Net-working.  Throughout the meeting People came in and out of Caribou, although there was one young lady who caught my eye. At first I thought I knew her, so I just stayed focused with Jamie.  He was explaining to me the in’s and outs of Wordpress and LinkedIn.  Time was passing yet the young lady was still a few feet away sitting very still, very calm in her movements waiting for something? Unfortunately when I took a closer look I realized I did not know this woman, but I wanted to know her or at least talk to her. As Jamie neared the end of my Homework Assignments, I walked him out the door.  At that very moment when my hand left Jamie’s to end the Shake of Comrade’s the lady walked by. I kid you not, Time slowed down as she looked into my eyes waiting for me to say something… So, with only one thing to say (Stating the Obviousness of the moment only to open the doors of conversation) I said, “You’re leaving already? I was just going to come talk with you” She walked towards her car and I walked inside. That was that, nothing else but Jamie’s Wonderful Assignments to get cracking on.  Well,  that’s what I thought too! Little did I know, she had ripped out some paper from a magazine outside and wrote her name and number. She marched right back inside ( you could tell she was nervous and the butterflies were pretty prevalent, as if you were just about to jump out of a plane to skydive) and Gave me this Golden ticket. I thought I was Charlie from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. “I got the Golden Ticket, I Got the Golden Ticket”  Now All we can do is see where it goes from here. Just like in my book, If you don’t make that move you never know what you could be passing up!

that expression was going through my head!
